One of the brightest radio sources in the sky has been discovered by an Australian team studying the universe's radio waves: a new form of a beam that comes and goes. A "transient" occurs when something in space turns on and off. A pulsar, which flashes on and off in milliseconds or seconds, could be the source. Or a supernova that appears for a few days and then fades away. But what they discovered was something that turned on and off every 20 minutes. Its behaviour is similar to that of an "ultra-long period magnetar," a form of slowly spinning neutron star that has been predicted but never witnessed. It's also possible that a collapsing star turned into a white dwarf pulsar, but this is quite rare. Well, this is not the end and there is more to look forward to as it is extreme physics.
