Katerina Teaiwa was born and raised in Fiji before pursuing her undergraduate degree at the University of California. Her sister was already enrolled there, so it appeared to be a simple path to go.
But it was here that she saw the disparity between the West's conception of the Pacific islands and the reality of life on the islands, and she realised what she had to do.
Katerina, now a professor at the Australian National University, has been chosen the 2021 Australian University Teacher of the Year for her innovative approach to teaching and mentoring Pacific studies students (ANU).
